As a former corporate finance lawyer, I understand firsthand the challenges of navigating a legal career and the stress and burnout the profession faces. The hidden cost of stress and burnout in the law.

Stress and burnout affect us all. And prevention is better than cure.

According to the latest data, 35% of workers globally are experiencing workplace burnout – and the figure rises to 43% in Australia. The legal profession is particularly susceptible.

 

Many legal professionals are experiencing significant stress in their work lives. In firms around Australia, we see symptoms of stress in leaders and teams. Maybe even in ourselves. Burnout comes at a high personal cost: it can cause serious physical, cognitive and physiological symptoms. Recovery can take years.

 

Burnout also impacts teams, firms and the profession as a whole: it decimates decision making, engagement, morale, performance and productivity, not to mention giving rise to ethical considerations.

But burnout does not have to be an inevitable outcome of a legal career. If chronic stress is understood and mitigated, we can ensure people experience sustainable and fulfilling legal careers.
